Southland fashion students excerpts from their own life stories for inspiration on a crash course with a top artist of the Pacific last week. Chanel Outlet Store Couture Lindah LePou completed a two-day workshop with the South Institute of Technology Bachelor of Fashion students on Thursday as part of their unit unconventional fabrics. The recently Southland based LePou, which is recognized internationally for his work, said it was important fashion students have embraced their uniqueness, rather than trying to adapt to refine the definitions of the industry. In fa'afafine, different was a big part of his art, and had even tried to encourage this self-reflection in the process of design students, LePou said. "I can not help but stand out like a sore thumb. We are all so different ... you have to kiss." The students were using unorthodox materials such as plastic bags, cardboard and tires to create clothing, and during his time in the class was encouraged to express their own personal story to add to their work. SIT fashion tutor Melissa James said LePou inspired the class to get excited about their projects. "It's amazing to have them here., The students were loving it," she said.
